Psychedelic Rock

Tame Impala

Tame Impala is a psychedelic rock band from Perth, Australia. It is the project of Kevin Parker who writes and records almost all of the music by himself. The live band consists of Kevin Parker (lead guitar and vocals), Dominic Simper (guitar and synth), Jay Watson (synth and backing vocals), Julien Barbagallo (drums), Nick Allbrook (ex-bassist) who decided to leave the band mid 2013 and is now being replaced by their close friend, Cam Avery (from The Growl).

Their name refers to the impala, a medium sized antelope. Their musical sound draws from a wide range of influences (most notably '60s and '70s psychedelic rock) and they like to see themselves as "a steady flowing psychedelic groove rock band that emphasizes dream-like melody."

The band signed a worldwide deal with label Modular Recordings in mid 2008, releasing their self titled EP in late 2008 and the single 'Sundown Syndrome' in 2009. Their debut album, "Innerspeaker", was released in 2010 to widespread critical acclaim. Their sophomore, "Lonerism", was released on October 5th, 2012, again to wide acclaim. Their third album, "Currents", followed in the summer of 2015.

A fourth studio album, The Slow Rush, is scheduled to be released in 2020. Read more on Last.fm. User-contributed text is available under the Creative Commons By-SA License; additional terms may apply.

Artist Type:

Salamander

There are several bands with that name: 1. Minneapolis outfit Salamander began as a duo in the summer of 1992 featuring Erik Wivinus and Sean Connaughty on guitars and vocals. They played mostly mellow drone-based instrumentals that in retrospect sounded much like contemporaries Labradford or Low. Doug Morman joined on bass in early 1993. They recorded and played gigs as a drummer-less trio until Bryce Kastning joined on drums and keyboards in early 1994.

Fun Machine

Double the fun! 1.Fun Machine is a progressive rock band from New Jersey. They are on BNS Sessions. 2. Under the same moniker are a band of cheeksters from Australia who sweep lewd themes into tasteful funk-munched pop zest. More antics than yo' gran's garage.

Proximity Butterfly

Proximity Butterfly, Psychedelic / Punk / Rock from Chengdu (China), started in August 2003 by Joshua C. Love and Heather Judson. A full fledge orchestrated Mars volta-style entourage, PB is now far from their first album, arcana with two drummers, sound effect personas, saxaphone/clarinet/trumpet, bass, and guitar. Preparing for the release of "The Antikythera Mechanism" PB has stepped off of the ground to hit China's nationwide music festival scene from Shanghai to Chengdu and Inner Mongolia to shows in the hottest clubs and bars around the nation.

Artist Type:

The Maze

An obscure San Francisco-area group that cut one extremely rare album in 1968, Armageddon (recorded at Leo Kulka's Golden State Recorders, and issued on MTA), which is highly valued in some collector circles. Actually, they don't rank as a very impressive find, in fact epitomizing some of the period's least enduring excesses. They originally recorded under the name Stonehenge, with a female vocalist, before assuming their more familiar name, and left behind a good deal more than an album's worth of tracks, some of which turned up on the 1995 Sundazed CD reissue of Armageddon.

Endless Boogie

"Meet Endless Boogie, the best-kept secret in New York's rock scene. They have the best name (taken from John Lee Hooker's 1971 album), the best onstage vibe and the best head-nodding jams. In a sea of derivative and freshly outfitted young bands, Endless Boogie -- with a combined age of 169 and members who count Canned Heat as one of their influences -- doesn't have a big agenda. They just want to rock with you, preferably all night long.

The Smoke

There are several bands with this name. The UK group The Smoke consisted of Mick Rowley on vocals, Mal Luker on guitar, Zeke Lund on bass and Geoff Gill on drums. They released a handful of singles from 1967 - 1970, with their biggest hit 'My Friend Jack' reaching no. 2 in Germany and no. 45 in the UK. See The Smoke (UK). However the singles 'Sweet Spanish' and 'Defeat Retreat' are by the Australian band The Smoke, taken from the 2009 album 'Blood Orange'. See: The Smoke (Oz)

Artist Type:

Sun Araw

The solo universe of Long Beach psychonauts Magic Lantern's guitarist Cameron Stallones. Spanning Spacemen 3 garage cosmos, Starving Weirdos coastal séance, and a healthy stratosphere of pan-dimensional astral feedbackers, Sun Araw floats freely from form to formlessness in the blink of a third eye. A great journey into white light dirge and dead distortion blues. Creepster tropical psychedelic drone for more creepsters like yrself.

Artist Type:

Dead Meadow

Dead Meadow met in the DC punk/indie scene, though their music draws from more faraway sources. The band formed in the fall of 1998 from the ashes of local bands The Impossible Five and Colour, when singer-guitarist Jason Simon, bassist Steve Kille, and drummer Mark Laughlin set out to fuse their love of early 70's hard rock and 60's psychedelia with their love of writers J.R.R. Tolkien and H.P. Lovecraft.
