It started in the summer of 1999 when Roberth, Janne, Mikael and Jonas began to talk about forming a new band. They wanted to build a brutal and straight-forward metal act. And in autumn that same year they started to rehearse. One day their friend Janos stopped by during a rehearsal-session. He asked if he could join and soon he was a permanent member of the band. Their line-up was now complete.

Putrefaction was a side project of Grave sometimes around 1989. But the songs were shortly after integrated in the Grave set and so the project was ended. In 2008 Ulcerate the band's line-up changed considerably - after much consideration the decision was made to opt for a return to the lower pitched vocals utilised during the band's demo period, and so bassist Paul Kelland stepped up to take over the vocal duty from Ben Read.
