Rod Paine & The Fulltime Lovers

Out front on vocals and harmonica, the charismatic Rod Paine is a stylish showman with one of the most soulful and inspiring voices in this land. Charming audiences for over 30 years, he has walked the stages throughout the country delivering a sound somewhere between Muscle Shoals and mid-sixties electric Blues. Add the broken-up harp sound emanating from his little 40-year-old amp, and he is hard to draw a comparison with.

Ray Tully and Tony Harwood form a dynamic rhythm section that is the backbone of the act. Performing together for over 34 years, this tight unit has graced various line-ups such as The Sensational Rocket 88’s, The Redliners, The Detonators and Straight 8’s to name just a few. In 2014, the Fulltime Lovers welcomed the extraordinary Co Tipping to take over guitar duties, wielding the Fender Stratocaster in a way very few can. This important inclusion signalled a shift in the band’s sound and an extension of its broad appeal.

The recent addition of Michael Shannon on Hammond organ has added colour and depth to the repertoire, where his incredible musical knowledge shows through. In 2013, Rod Paine & The Fulltime Lovers won the prestigious MBAS Blues Performer of the Year Award. They subsequently represented the MBAS in 2014 at the International Blues Challenge in Memphis USA, where they competed with the world’s best to impress an international audience.

Check out some of Rod Paine and The Fulltime Lovers below thanks to the fantastic MBAS:

Tyson Yoshi

Ben Cheng Tsun Yin (Chinese: 程浚彥; born 17 July 1994), better known by his stage name Tyson Yoshi, is a Hong Kong independent singer, songwriter, and MV director. He made his debut in 2018 with his single To My Queen.

Career
Tyson Yoshi attended Sedbergh School in the United Kingdom and later studied interior architecture at the University of Brighton. In 2018, he started producing music in Taiwan and debuted with the single, To My Queen. In July 2019, he became famous with Christy, a song written to his girlfriend. Christy went on to accumulate more than one million views on YouTube, the first of his songs to do so.

The name "Tyson Yoshi" derives from his first name's initialism, "T.Y". "Tyson" was one of his middle-school nicknames, and "Yoshi" is from Yoshinoya, a food chain found widely across Hong Kong.

Tyson Yoshi started as an independent singer in 2018. His first album, 1st, was released in 2019. He is one of Hong Kong's best-known hip hop artists and rappers, with over two million streams on Spotify in more than 100 countries in 2019. In 2021, his popularity surged again after his performance in Music is Live with Terence Lam, Keung To and Jer Lau. As of 2022, Christy has garnered more than 20 million views on YouTube.

Mariah Carey

Mariah Carey, (born March 27, 1969/70, Huntington, New York, U.S.), American pop singer, noted for her remarkable vocal range. She was one of the most successful female performers of the 1990s and remained popular into the early 21st century.

Depending on the source, Carey was born in 1969 or 1970. Her mother was a vocal coach and former opera singer, and Carey began performing as a child. After graduating (1987) from high school in Greenlawn, New York, she moved to New York City to pursue a singing career. Carey made a demo tape that led Tommy Mottola, an executive at Columbia Records, to sign her in 1988; the couple married in 1993. Her debut album, Mariah Carey (1990), showcased her incredible vocal range and blended several musical genres, including gospel, pop, and rhythm and blues (R&B). It was a huge success, and in 1991 Carey won Grammy Awards for best new artist and best female pop vocalist. That same year the title track from her follow-up album, Emotions, became her fifth consecutive chart-topping single. Subsequent hit albums included Music Box (1993) and Daydream (1995), both of which sold some 10 million copies in the United States, as well as the holiday-themed Merry Christmas (1994). All the recordings were accompanied by music videos that helped make Carey a fixture on the cable network MTV.

Despite such success, Carey grew tired of the sweet and wholesome image that her label had developed for her. After announcing her separation from Mottola in 1997 (they divorced in 1998), she released Butterfly (1997), which reflected her new independence. The album was heavily influenced by hip-hop and rap, and the related music videos revealed a more sexual Carey. The single “Heartbreaker” (featuring Jay-Z) topped the charts in 1999, making Carey the first artist to hit number one on the Billboard singles chart in each year of a decade. The achievement underscored her status as one of the best-selling vocalists in the world that decade.

In 2001 Carey signed an $80 million contract with Virgin Records that made her the highest-paid recording artist. Her career was soon interrupted, however, when she suffered a breakdown and was hospitalized following erratic behaviour. (Carey revealed in 2018 that she had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder.) She starred in Glitter (2001), but both the semiautobiographical film and its accompanying album did not fare well. In 2002 Virgin terminated its contract with Carey. Later that year she signed with Island/Def Jam, but her first album for the label, Charmbracelet (2002), was a disappointment. However, her follow-up, The Emancipation of Mimi (2005), was a critical and commercial success, becoming the top-selling album of the year in the United States, with more than six million copies sold. It also earned three Grammy Awards, including best contemporary R&B album. “Touch My Body,” from E=MC2 (2008), became Carey’s 18th number one song on the Billboard singles chart, moving her past Elvis Presley on the all-time list and leaving her just two short of the Beatles’ record. Her later recordings included Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel (2009), a second Christmas album (2010), Me. I Am Mariah…The Elusive Chanteuse (2014), and Caution (2018).

In addition to her recording career, Carey continued to act. After appearing in the drama Tennessee (2008), she earned praise for her portrayal of a social worker in the critically acclaimed Precious (2009). Her later film credits included Lee Daniels’ The Butler (2013) and Girls Trip (2017). In 2013 she joined the television talent show American Idol as a judge for its 12th season, and two years later she began a series of residencies in Las Vegas.

Her memoir, The Meaning of Mariah Carey (written with Michaela Angela Davis), was published in 2020.

Those Pretty Wrongs

Those Pretty Wrongs are Jody Stephens and Luther Russell, two old friends and veterans of the music scene in different ways. Jody was the drummer for the legendary band Big Star and now helps run equally legendary Ardent Studios in Memphis. Luther Russell was the leader of seminal roots-rock band The Freewheelers and is now an acclaimed solo artist and producer.

It was the documentary Big Star: Nothing Can Hurt Me that brought Jody and Luther together creatively, when Jody asked Luther to join him for some promo performances. A chemistry was immediately noticed. They began writing songs and performing them whenever possible, soon taking their name from the opening line of Shakespeare Sonnet 41, which they slipped into one of their first collaborations, “Fool Of Myself”. They released the first track they cut in Memphis, “Lucky Guy”, with “Fool Of Myself” as the flip side. There was an outpouring of support for the new music, which gave Jody and Luther the confidence to move forward.

Those Pretty Wrongs was tracked entirely to 2” tape at Ardent Studios in Memphis, using much of the old Big Star gear, including Jody’s original kit from Radio City and Third and Chris Bell’s acoustic and electric guitars from #1 Record. The album was mixed by Luther Russell and Jason Hiller at Hiller’s Electrosound Studios in Los Angeles, CA. Jody is way out in front on this release--really for the first time ever--taking all lead vocals and co-writing all of the songs with Luther. Through the words on this record Jody opens up about his life, which has been well-documented, but not in this very intimate way. Adds Stephens: “For me the lyrics are a walk through day-to-day emotions and experiences."

Luther lives in Los Angeles and Jody in Memphis, so there was a real commitment to finishing these songs and cutting them until they were totally satisfied. Those Pretty Wrongs will be released in May in a unique partnering between the Ardent Music label and Burger Records. No one could be happier than Jody and Luther, who feel that this keeps a family-like feeling to the release. “Why stop now”, remarks Luther. “We’ve wanted to keep this thing sounding and feeling personal from the start because it’s extremely personal for both of us.” Just like Luther's handmade collage inside the LP, the record is akin to a series of snapshots: of lives present and past, and fleeting moments of simple joy and reflection.

Shenay

Hey I'm Shenay, an 18 y/o singer-songwriter from Melbourne Australia. My music background stems from my mum putting me into piano and guitar lessons around the age of 4 which led to a bunch of practical and theoretical exams, eventually singing was added to the mix. From there onwards, all my instrumental skills fused together to help cue my creativity for composing and writing.
