Cloud Control

When the mother of guitarist Alister Wright banned him from playing Counter Strike and signed him up for the local musical to make some friends, Mamma Wright claimed she only did what any mother would have done. It was, however, an act of exemplary parenting that would be applauded in child-rearing manuals for years to come. From his back row position in the chorus of Pirates of Penzance, Alister could see that the production team was having issues with the shaggy-haired lighting man Ulrich Lenffer, whose need to hit things rhythmically made him useless at following the directors cues.

The Cannanes

The Cannanes have been described as 'the world's most indie band.' Despite never having a manager, agent or signing a record deal they have toured the world, produced numerous recordings, and been recognised internationally as one of Australia's best known bands. Even Kurt Cobain listed the Cannanes as a band he liked in his journals. Since the Cannanes' first release 'Bored Angry and Jealous' was named Single of the Year by UK music magazine NME in late 1986, the band has attracted an ever expanding international following.

The Verlaines

The origins of New Zealand's Verlaines can be traced back as early as 1979, with the group's founder Graeme Downes took direct inspiration from fellow Dunedin group, the Clean to form a band of his own. It wasn't until 1981 that the group made their first public appearance with their initial five-piece line-up. The band have so far released seven full-length albums on three different labels, one mini album, three singles and two compilations.

Parades

Parades are a young art rock band from Sydney who wisely choose to create their own music with no outside input or interference. Featuring Dan Cunningham, Tim Jenkins, Michael Scarpin and Jonathan Boulet – Parades’ debut album Foreign Tapes is out now via Dot Dash Recordings. The album is expansive and ambitious; a haze of pop harmonies, post rock guitars and electronic meanderings. Drum Media did a great job describing the band when they said

Lime Cordiale

Oliver and Louis Leimbach started playing music together as brothers later in life, when they could stay put in the same room without giving each other dead-arms. Thanks to a nagging mother, they didn’t give up their classical instruments and brought them into the band. Brendan Champion on trombone and James Django Jennings on drums make up the rest of Lime Cordiale. With influences ranging from French pop to parental arguments, from Indian Raga music to midnight snacks, Lime Cordiale is the new Quirk Pop. Read more on Last.fm. Broadcast

Space age pop collagists Broadcast formed in Birmingham, England, in 1995; comprised of vocalist Trish Keenan, guitarist Tim Felton, bassist James Cargill, keyboardist Roj Stevens, and drummer Steve Perkins. Little Red

Straight outta Melbourne, Australia, with 3 lead singers fighting for every note over 4 part harmonies & skin-tight primal rhythms, Adrian Beltrame (Guitar, Vocals), Dominic Byrne (Vocals, Guitar), Quang Dinh (Vocals, Bass), Taka Honda (Drums) and Tom Hartney (Vocals, Percussion) are Little Red. They are the hottest all singing, all dancing incarnation of the quintessential rock 'n' roll band, simultaneously both classic and anachronistic in a way that's guaranteed to generate excitement.

Line Drawings

Line Drawings have just released their debut album take/over. Take/over was crafted in the summer of 2009/10 at various places in Sydney’s inner- west, and later polished at either side of the Pacific by Wayne Connolly (You Am I, Josh Pyke, Youth Group) and Bob Weston (Sebadoh, Archers Of Loaf). ‘Take/over’ calls to mind the places it was made. Its dissonant and dirty guitars recall the sounds of quintessential Australian indie rock while the easy complexity of the rhythm section would not be out of place in Chicago.

Hungry Kids of Hungary

While the mere mention of their name often invokes raised eyebrows and amused smiles among the uninitiated, Brisbane four-piece Hungry Kids of Hungary produce music that inspires equal measures of curiosity and joy. Dressing their immaculate indie tunes with a healthy dose of 60’s pop sensibility and lashings of soul HKoH have wasted no time in carving out a name for themselves on the Australian music scene with a quartet of radio singles and their relentless touring regime.
